THE CARS

1914 Ford Model T Four Seater Tourer (Gladys Emmanuel)

This car was built in Detroit in February 1914. Like all Model T's it has a three litre engine and two forward speeds. It is one of over 15 million Model T's built between 1909 and 1927 (compare that figure with 6 million Minis produced). Once commonplace, the Model T is nowadays quite a rarity in the UK. Most were scrapped between the wars when the then rate of road tax penalised their large and inefficient engines. This car when new was exported to Uruguay where it stayed until 1979 before coming to the UK. The car has acetylene lights and lots of exposed brasswork. It has been completely overhauled during the last five years.

1920 Ford Model T Three Seater Roadster (Hermione)

Mechanically almost the same as Gladys Emmanuel, Hermione has a most unusual body - with two front seats and one 'mother in law seat' at the back. She has electric as well as oil lamps and a black radiator. By 1920, brass fittings on cars were considered 'old fashioned'.

Neither car is fast but travelling in them is a real treat compared with the experience of modern cars. The smell, the exhaust note, and (in the 1914 car) the chattering of the trembler ignition coils combine to delight the senses.

WEDDINGS (usually within 15 miles of Settle)

The charge for a wedding within 15 miles of Settle is £275, which includes everything to do with the car. No VAT is payable. At an agreed extra charge we may be able to accommodate weddings further afield.

There are no hidden extras and we shall agree with you about such things as conveying bridesmaids, photography and routes to be followed. We want to do everything we can to make the car journey/s enjoyable and trouble free. The car will be immaculately presented and dressed with white ribbons as in the photographs. The rear seat will be covered with a white sheet. Should it be raining, there is the hood and side-screens.

We ask for a £75 non-refundable deposit, the balance to be paid two weeks before the wedding, when we shall go over the arrangements in detail.

There is plenty of space in the car for two people in the rear seat and one (plus the driver) in front. There is far more legroom than in a modern car. You are most welcome to see the car and get to know it beforehand.

BIRTHDAY TREATS AND OTHER SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Besides the 1914 Tourer we have the three seater 1920 Model T Roadster. Both cars are available for 'fun trips' or special occasions and treats. The three-seater has the driver and one passenger in front, the third passenger sitting in a single seat, higher up, at the back. These seats were sometimes known as mother-in-law seats. Riding in that seat is memorable. From Settle, there are a number of spectacular runs, most notably to the Ribblehead Viaduct and back, stopping for a cream tea, a visit to a pub or restaurant or a picnic, which we can provide. You may prefer to meander the quiet country lanes in the Forest of Bowland and the Ribble valley. Discuss you requirements with us and we shall do our very best to fulfil your wishes. We shall agree a fixed priced based around £60 an hour.
